If your cruise itinerary says Gdańsk, there is a good chance your ship will actually tie up in Gdynia, the port city at the northern end of the Tri-City. Gdańsk Old Town is still within an hour by train or car. What matters is knowing which quay you are on, how long the transfer takes and how much buffer to keep before all-aboard. Here is all of it, with the 2026 port schedule and real train fares.
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Main cruise berth | French Quay (Nabrzeże Francuskie), Gdynia, beside the Emigration Museum |
| 2026 season in Gdynia | 67 scheduled calls, 9 April to 21 December |
| Typical stay | 10 hours (often 08:00 to 18:00); range on the 2026 schedule about 7 to 16 hours |
| Quay to Gdynia Główna station | About 2.5 km, 30 minutes on foot |
| SKM Gdynia Główna to Gdańsk Główny | About 35 minutes, 11 zł single (about €2.60) |
| Quay to Gdańsk Old Town by road | About 30 to 40 km, 40 to 60 minutes |
| Smaller ships in Gdańsk | Westerplatte quay (most calls), Oliwskie Quay in Nowy Port, WOC II; 66 calls in 2026 |
Key takeaways
- Ships over about 240 metres use Gdynia; Gdańsk's own quays take the smaller ships
- From the French Quay it is a 30-minute walk to the SKM station, or take your line's shuttle into town if offered
- Plan one main goal per call: Gdańsk Old Town, a Tri-City loop, or Malbork Castle
- Keep at least an hour of buffer before all-aboard on any independent plan

Where do cruise ships dock in Gdynia?
The large ships berth at the French Quay (Nabrzeże Francuskie) in Gdynia's port, right beside the old Marine Station, the building from which emigrants once sailed for the Americas and which now houses the Emigration Museum. The Port of Gdynia Authority publishes every scheduled call with arrival and departure times; for 2026 it lists 67 calls from 9 April to 21 December. The ships are big, averaging around 275 metres, and the largest on the 2026 list are 332.6 metres long.
The quay is in a working port with few facilities, but the town is close: Kościuszko Square, the museum ships Dar Pomorza and ORP Błyskawica and the seafront boulevard are within roughly 20 to 30 minutes on foot. Gdynia Główna, the main station, is about 2.5 km, or 30 minutes' walk. Many cruise lines run a shuttle bus into the centre on busy days; whether there is one, and what it costs, is set by your line, so check the daily programme.
Stay times in 2026 are mostly 8 to 12 hours, with 08:00 to 18:00 the most common pattern. A few calls are shorter, around seven and a half hours, and some ships arrive at 13:30 and leave in the evening, which changes your plan completely. Check your own ship's times rather than assuming a full day.
Which cruise ships dock in Gdańsk itself?
Smaller ships go to the Port of Gdańsk. In 2026 it expects 66 calls, by vessels averaging around 180 metres and none longer than about 240. Three berths are used:
- Westerplatte quay (Nabrzeże Obrońców Westerplatte), near the harbour mouth, takes most calls. The Westerplatte memorial and Wisłoujście Fortress are about five minutes' walk away, and the Old Town is about 12 km, 15 to 25 minutes by road. Read our Westerplatte guide if you have spare time on the quay.
- Oliwskie Quay in Nowy Port, further up the harbour channel, closer to the city.
- WOC II, a terminal used for a handful of small-ship calls.
The Port of Gdańsk says licensed taxis wait at its cruise quays and work to posted fixed price lists, and that there is a marina near the Westerplatte quay with boat trips up to the Old Town.
How do I get from the ship to Gdańsk Old Town?
By SKM train: cheapest and reliable
Walk or take the line's shuttle to Gdynia Główna, then take an SKM train towards Gdańsk. Trains run frequently through the day. It is about 35 minutes to Gdańsk Główny, the main station, or a few minutes more to Gdańsk Śródmieście, which is closer to the Main Town. The official SKM fare for that distance is 11 zł (about €2.60); Gdynia to Sopot is 8 zł. Door to door, allow 70 to 80 minutes. Our getting around Gdańsk guide explains the ticket types.
By taxi
Taxis gather at the quay on ship days, but several thousand passengers disembarking at once push demand and prices up. Agree the price before you set off.
By private transfer or shore excursion
A driver at the gangway is the fastest option, and the only sensible one for Malbork. The road trip to Gdańsk Old Town takes 40 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic and route. ShuttleHero arranges quay pickups as part of its tours or as a transfer; because the cruise quay is not on its standard route list, the transfer price is fixed when you book. (ShuttleHero is run by the same local team as Gdańsk Insider.)
Sample shore-excursion plans
Six hours ashore: Gdańsk Old Town only
With six hours from gangway to gangway, or a short afternoon call, do one thing well. Take the train to Gdańsk Główny and walk the Royal Way: the Upland and Golden Gates, Long Street, Long Market and the Neptune Fountain, St Mary's Basilica, Mariacka Street and the Crane on the Motława. Allow about two and a half hours with a coffee. Our Old Town walking tour gives the route stop by stop.
Eight hours or more: Gdańsk plus one extra
With eight hours, add one of these, not all three:
- Sopot on the way back. Leave the train at Sopot, walk 12 to 15 minutes down Monte Cassino to the pier and spend an hour by the sea before the 20-minute hop to Gdynia. See our Sopot pier guide for the 2026 tickets.
- A big museum. The European Solidarity Centre or the Museum of the Second World War, both a short walk from the Old Town. Allow two to three hours. Our museums guide lists the closing days.
- Malbork Castle instead of Gdańsk. About 95 km from the quay, 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes each way by car, so only with a driver and only on a call of eight hours or more. Details in our Malbork day trip guide.

Timing table: how much buffer do I need?
All-aboard is usually 30 to 60 minutes before departure; your ship's daily programme gives the exact time. Our rule for independent travel is to be back on the quay at least 60 minutes before all-aboard, and 90 minutes on the train if you are changing at Sopot. The example below assumes a 08:00 to 18:00 call with all-aboard at 17:30.
| Step | By SKM train | With a driver |
|---|---|---|
| Off the ship | 08:30 | 08:30 |
| Arrive Gdańsk Old Town | about 09:45 (walk, train, walk) | about 09:20 |
| Time in Gdańsk | 09:45 to 14:45 | 09:20 to 13:30, then Sopot 13:50 to 15:00 |
| Leave for the ship | 14:45 at the latest | 15:00 |
| Back on the quay | about 16:00 | about 15:30 |
| Buffer before all-aboard | 90 minutes | 2 hours |
The buffer is not wasted. Trains run late now and then, the roads into Gdynia slow down in the afternoon, and if you miss the ship, catching up at the next port is at your cost. The ship waits for its own excursions, not for independent plans or private tours.
Private shore excursions from Gdynia
ShuttleHero runs private tours from Gdańsk with a driver, and for cruise passengers the pickup and drop-off can be at the quay. The driver is a driver, not a guide. Prices are per person and depend on group size:
| Tour | 1 person | 2 people | 4 people | 8 people | Included |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tri-City (Gdańsk, Sopot, Gdynia) | €150 | €90 | €50 | €35 | Transport with driver |
| Malbork Castle | €210 | €130 | €95 | €75 | Castle tickets and audio guide |
| Westerplatte | €95 | €55 | €40 | €30 | Transport with driver |
| Stutthof memorial | €150 | €90 | €60 | €40 | Transport; museum entry is free |
These are the standard tour prices from Gdańsk. For a pickup at the Gdynia quay, the fixed price is quoted when you book; give your ship, berth and all-aboard time. Payment is in advance by card online (Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay), cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, and the driver waits up to 30 minutes free at a port. Book at least three hours ahead; for a cruise day, book the day before.
For Malbork, the Malbork Castle tour includes the castle tickets and the audio guide, which matters on a cruise day because you skip the ticket queue. If you would rather plan your own route, the booking page quotes a fixed price for a quay pickup to any address.
Short on time? Stay in Gdynia
With five hours or less, skip Gdańsk. The Emigration Museum is right by the quay; its 2026 permanent exhibition ticket is 28 zł (20 zł reduced, 74 zł family) and the visit takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Then walk to the museum ships on the South Pier. Our Gdynia guide fills in the rest.
