Two ferry routes bring most people from Sweden to the Tri-City: Polferries from Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm, into Gdańsk, and Stena Line from Karlskrona into Gdynia. Neither terminal is in an Old Town, and the onward journey is where foot passengers lose time. This guide explains where each terminal is, when the ships arrive, and the cheapest and simplest ways on to Gdańsk's Main Town, Sopot, Gdynia and the airport. We wrote it with Swedish visitors in mind, coming from Stockholm or Blekinge.

Quick Answer: Polferries ships from Nynäshamn dock at ul. Mjr. Sucharskiego 70, Gdańsk, near Westerplatte, usually at 12:00 after an 18:00 departure. Buses 106 and 138 run from the stop “Muzeum Westerplatte – Terminal Promowy” to Dworzec Główny in about 30 minutes for 4.80 zł. Stena Line uses ul. Polska 4, Gdynia; buses 133 and 119 go to Gdynia Główna.

Polferries: Nynäshamn to Gdańsk

Polferries sails between Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm, and Gdańsk. In the timetable published for October 2026 to January 2027, there is a sailing almost every day in each direction: departure 18:00, arrival 12:00 the next day, alternating between the ships Nova Star and Wawel. A handful of dates have no sailing or a different departure time, so check your date on the Polferries timetable.

Polferries also sails Gdańsk–Karlshamn several times a week, mostly overnight, from the same Gdańsk base.

Where it docks: Polferries gives its Gdańsk office and ferry base as ul. Mjr. Sucharskiego 70, 80-601 Gdańsk. This is in the outer port on the Westerplatte side of the harbour, roughly 6 km in a straight line north-east of the Main Town, among container terminals and port roads. The nearest city bus stop is named Muzeum Westerplatte – Terminal Promowy, after the ferry terminal and the nearby Westerplatte museum site.

Check-in for the return sailing opens 120 minutes before departure, according to Polferries, so plan to be at the terminal by about 16:00 for an 18:00 sailing.

How do I get from the Gdańsk ferry terminal to the Old Town?

By bus: two ZTM Gdańsk lines start at the stop Muzeum Westerplatte – Terminal Promowy and run to the city centre:

In the weekday timetable valid until 23 October 2026, a bus leaving the terminal reaches Brama Wyżynna, at the top of the Royal Way, in about 26 to 28 minutes. After a 12:00 arrival the next weekday departures were 12:45 (line 106) and 13:14 (line 138), then roughly twice an hour through the afternoon. Weekend timetables differ, and ZTM changes timetables regularly, so check the departure board at the stop or the ZTM website on the day.

Tickets: a ZTM Gdańsk single-ride ticket is 4.80 zł and a 75-minute ticket 6.00 zł. The simplest way is to tap a contactless bank card on the FALA reader inside the bus. If you will also take trams or trains that day, a 24-hour ticket is 22 zł for Gdańsk city transport, or 34 zł for the metropolitan ticket that adds SKM trains.

By taxi: taxis in Gdańsk run on the city tariff of a 9 zł start plus 3.90 zł per km by day, or 5.85 zł per km at night and on Sundays. By our calculation that puts the 8 to 9 km drive to the Main Town at roughly 40 to 50 zł by day.

While you are out there: the Westerplatte battlefield, where the Second World War began on 1 September 1939, is close to the terminal. Our Westerplatte guide explains what there is to see.

Stena Line: Karlskrona to Gdynia

Stena Line connects Karlskrona in Blekinge with Gdynia, using Stena Ebba, Stena Estelle and Stena Spirit with up to six departures a day across both directions, day and night crossings. Exact times and crossing lengths vary by date, so check your sailing in Stena Line's booking tool.

Where it docks: Stena Line's Gdynia port page gives the terminal address as ul. Polska 4, 81-339 Gdynia and describes it as a short walk from central Gdynia. Older guides and some maps still show a ferry terminal on ul. Kwiatkowskiego; use the address on Stena's current page. Passenger desks open two hours before departure.

A current note: Stena Line says that because of modernisation of the passenger gangway in Gdynia, foot passengers and cyclists are carried by bus between the terminal and the ship, and getting off the ferry can take about an hour. If you are meeting someone or have a train to catch, build that in.

How do I get from the Gdynia terminal to Gdańsk or Sopot?

To central Gdynia: Stena Line points foot passengers to buses 133 and 119, which link the stop Dworzec Morski / Muzeum Emigracji with Gdynia Główna railway station. A taxi to the centre takes about 10 to 15 minutes, according to Stena. A metropolitan single ticket valid on Gdynia's ZKM buses costs 4.80 zł in an app or 5.20 zł on paper.

To Sopot or Gdańsk: from Gdynia Główna take the SKM. Sopot is about 14 minutes away and Gdańsk Główny about 35 minutes, with trains every 10 minutes on weekday daytimes. Buy the 8.50 zł Bilet Miejski (Gdynia and Sopot) for Sopot, or the 12.50 zł Bilet Trójmiejski for Gdańsk. Our Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia transport guide explains the tickets and day passes in detail. If you are staying in Gdynia itself, start with our Gdynia guide.

A taxi from Gdynia to Gdańsk is expensive by comparison, because the meter runs on an out-of-town tariff once you leave Gdańsk and Sopot. Neptun Taxi estimates around 220 zł between central Gdynia and Gdańsk Główny by day.

From the ferry to the airport

From the Polferries terminal in Gdańsk: take bus 106 or 138 to Dworzec Główny, then either bus 210 to the airport (about 40 minutes) or the SKM to Gdańsk Wrzeszcz and the airport train from platform 3. Allow around an hour and a half in total. A 75-minute bus ticket may not cover both buses with the wait, so a 22 zł 24-hour ticket is the safe choice.

From the Stena terminal in Gdynia: get to Gdynia Główna, then take a train to the airport, either through Gdańsk Wrzeszcz or on the direct route via Gdańsk Osowa. The 12.50 zł Bilet Trójmiejski covers the rail journey. Our airport guide has the details of the airport line, which also work in reverse.

Private transfer from the port

For foot passengers with luggage, ShuttleHero (ShuttleHero is run by the same local team as Gdańsk Insider.) picks up at both ferry terminals. Port pickups are not on its standard price list, so the fixed price is quoted when you book, per vehicle: a car for 1–3 people or a van for 4–8.

The driver waits free for 30 minutes at the port, which matters given the current one-hour disembarkation warning in Gdynia, so put your sailing in the booking notes. Payment is in advance online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. Book at least 3 hours ahead. Child seats are €8 each on request.

Practical notes for visitors from Sweden

Poland uses the złoty, not the euro or the krona. Ticket machines, transport apps and the FALA readers on buses and trams all accept bank cards, so you do not need złoty in hand to get from the ferry into town.

The 12:00 Polferries arrival leaves a full afternoon. Drop your bags, walk the Royal Way from Brama Wyżynna to the Motława, and you are on Długi Targ well before dark even in winter. Our one day in Gdańsk itinerary works well from an afternoon start, and where to stay explains which districts are easiest to reach from the port.

Going home on the 18:00 sailing? With check-in opening two hours ahead and a half-hour bus ride, leaving the Main Town by 15:00 is a comfortable margin.
