Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia run into each other along the bay, and one railway line threads all three: the SKM, the Tri-City's commuter train. It is the fastest way between them at almost any time of day, and once you know which ticket to buy it is very cheap. This guide covers the SKM in practical detail, then the alternatives: trams and buses, the day passes that combine them, summer water trams, taxis and a private tour of all three cities.

- Buy the ticket before boarding, from a platform machine, a ticket office or an app
- Bilet Miejski (8.50 zł) covers two neighbouring cities; Bilet Trójmiejski (12.50 zł) covers all three
- SKM tickets are also valid on Polregio regional trains, but not on PKP Intercity trains
- If you will use trains and trams on the same day, the 34 zł metropolitan 24-hour ticket covers everything
- Water trams are a summer-only service; none run in late October

How often does the SKM run, and how long does it take?
The SKM (Szybka Kolej Miejska, "fast city railway") runs from Gdańsk Śródmieście, just south of the main station, through Gdańsk Główny, Wrzeszcz and Oliwa, into Sopot, on through Gdynia Główna and out to Rumia and Wejherowo. Some trains continue to Lębork.
In the timetable valid from 19 to 23 October 2026, a train leaving Gdańsk Główny reaches:
- Gdańsk Wrzeszcz in about 7 minutes
- Gdańsk Oliwa (for the cathedral and park) in about 14 minutes
- Sopot in 21 minutes
- Gdynia Główna in 34 to 35 minutes
On weekday daytimes trains leave every 10 minutes in each direction. Evenings and weekends have fewer trains, and a small number keep running through the night, so a late dinner in Sopot does not have to end with a taxi. The SKM publishes new timetable files every few weeks, often because of engineering works; the next period starts on 25 October 2026, so check the current one before a late-night return.
Which station? For Sopot's pier and Monte Cassino Street, get off at Sopot. For Gdynia's seafront, the ORP Błyskawica and the Dar Pomorza, get off at Gdynia Główna and walk down 10 Lutego street to Skwer Kościuszki. For Gdynia's Orłowo cliff and pier, Gdynia Orłowo is the stop. Our Sopot day trip and Gdynia day trip guides cover what to do once you arrive.
Which ticket should I buy?
SKM fares follow the regional Taryfa Pomorska, shared with Polregio. For visitors, three single tickets matter:
- Bilet Miejski, Gdańsk and Sopot: 8.50 zł. One journey anywhere within Gdańsk and Sopot, including the airport line as far as Gdańsk Osowa. This is the Gdańsk–Sopot ticket.
- Bilet Miejski, Gdynia and Sopot: 8.50 zł. The same idea for Sopot–Gdynia trips.
- Bilet Trójmiejski: 12.50 zł. One journey across all three cities, between Gdańsk Lipce and Gdynia Cisowa. This is the Gdańsk–Gdynia ticket.
Ordinary distance tickets also exist, from 7.00 zł for up to 6 km and 8.00 zł for 7 to 12 km, which can work out cheaper for a hop of a few stops within Gdańsk. The ticket machine prices the exact journey when you choose a destination.
Where to buy: machines on the platforms and in station halls, SKM ticket offices (at Gdańsk Główny, in the tunnel to the platforms, open 6:00 to 20:00 on weekdays), the SKM website, or apps such as SkyCash, moBiLET, jakdojade.pl and System FALA. On the platform you can also use the FALA rail machines with a contactless bank card. Buy before you board.
Which trains? SKM tickets are valid on SKM and Polregio trains only. Long-distance PKP Intercity trains also stop at Sopot and Gdynia, but they need their own ticket.
Reductions: passengers aged 60 and over get 25% off SKM tickets. Most other reductions are tied to Polish documents.
Day passes and the metropolitan ticket
Three passes are worth knowing if you will move around a lot in one day:
- SKM 24-hour zone ticket: 28 zł. Unlimited SKM and Polregio travel for 24 hours between Gdańsk Lipce, Gdańsk Śródmieście, Żukowo, Reda and Wejherowo. The 72-hour version is 56 zł. Trains only.
- Metropolitan 24-hour rail and city ticket for all operators: 34 zł. Issued by MZKZG, the Tri-City transport union. It covers SKM and Polregio trains in the area plus all buses, trams and trolleybuses of ZTM Gdańsk, ZKM Gdynia and MZK Wejherowo. The 72-hour version is 68 zł, the best-value option for a three-day stay that includes Sopot and Gdynia.
- Metropolitan 24-hour city ticket: 24 zł. Buses and trams in Gdańsk, Gdynia and Wejherowo, but no trains. The 72-hour version is 48 zł.
If you only stay in Gdańsk, ZTM Gdańsk's own 24-hour ticket at 22 zł is slightly cheaper. The metropolitan passes are sold at SKM ticket offices, ZTM and ZKM customer points and in the apps listed above.
Trams, buses and trolleybuses
Gdańsk has trams and buses run by ZTM Gdańsk. A single-ride ticket is 4.80 zł, a 75-minute ticket 6.00 zł. You can pay by tapping a contactless bank card on the FALA reader on board. Trams are the way to Brzeźno beach and the zoo; see our getting around Gdańsk guide for the city network.
Sopot has no trams; its buses are organised by ZTM Gdańsk under a separate Sopot tariff. Gdynia runs its own buses and trolleybuses through ZKM Gdynia. A metropolitan single ticket (4.80 zł in an app, 5.20 zł on paper) works on ZTM Gdańsk, ZKM Gdynia and MZK Wejherowo lines.
Between the cities themselves, buses are slower than the train. They make sense only for a specific address away from the SKM line, such as the Gdynia ferry terminal or the upper districts of Sopot.
Water trams in summer
In the summer season ZTM Gdańsk runs water trams (lines with an F number) on the Motława and out towards Westerplatte and the beach districts. They are a pleasant way to see the port, but they are seasonal and weather-dependent. On 22 October 2026 ZTM showed no timetable for the F lines, and the 2027 season has not yet been announced. Our Gdańsk boat trips guide covers the private cruises that also run in summer.
Taxis between the three cities
Taxis are useful late at night or with heavy bags, but crossing a city boundary changes the tariff. According to Neptun Taxi, the airport's taxi partner, Gdańsk and Sopot share the city tariff: a 9 zł start plus 3.90 zł per km by day, or 5.85 zł per km at night. Its own estimates for Sopot are about 50 zł from Oliwa, 60 zł from Wrzeszcz and 80 zł from Gdańsk Główny by day.
Gdynia is more expensive because the meter switches to an out-of-town tariff of 7.80 zł per km by day. Neptun estimates about 220 zł from Gdańsk Główny to central Gdynia by day, against 12.50 zł for the train. Arriving by air instead? Our airport to city centre guide covers the flat airport fares to all three cities.
All three cities in one day
The SKM makes a do-it-yourself Tri-City day easy: Oliwa Cathedral in the morning, lunch and the pier in Sopot, then Gdynia's seafront and museum ships, back in Gdańsk for dinner. A 34 zł metropolitan pass covers the lot. Our Tri-City tour guide has a full route, and Sopot vs Gdańsk helps if you are deciding where to base yourself.
If you would rather not change trains, ShuttleHero's private Tri-City tour (ShuttleHero is run by the same local team as Gdańsk Insider.) picks you up at your hotel and drives between the three cities at your pace. Prices are per person: €150 when travelling alone, €90 each for two, €50 each for four and €35 each for eight. This is transport with a driver only: the driver is not a guide, and any entry tickets are paid on the spot. Payment is online by card in advance, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup.
