Gdańsk and Kraków sit at opposite ends of Poland, roughly 600 km apart by road, and plenty of visitors want to see both on one trip: the Baltic port and Hanseatic brick in the north, Wawel, Kazimierz and the Market Square in the south. There is no single best way to cover that distance. The direct train is the default for most people, the flight only wins in certain months, the bus is the budget fallback, and a private transfer makes sense for families and groups with luggage. Here is how the four options compare on time, money and hassle in 2026.

Quick Answer: The easiest way from Gdańsk to Kraków is the direct PKP Intercity Pendolino: about 5 to 5¾ hours city centre to city centre, with standard fares from around 244 zł one way (cheaper early-booking fares appear). LOT flew direct only in summer 2026 (29 May to 28 September). FlixBus takes about 9 to 10 hours. A private ShuttleHero transfer costs €760 per car (1–3 people) or €990 per van (4–8).

1. By train: the Pendolino and the slow trains

The direct train is the best option for most travellers between Gdańsk and Kraków. PKP Intercity runs its Express InterCity Premium trains (EIP, the Pendolino sets) straight through Warsaw without a change, and the fastest timetabled service takes 5 hours 4 minutes; most departures take between 5h15 and 5h45. In the timetable we checked, the first direct Pendolino left Gdańsk before 6:00 and the last one around 18:00, with departures roughly every one to two hours in between.

Trains start at Gdańsk Główny, the main station next to the Old Town, and many also call at Gdańsk Wrzeszcz and Gdańsk Oliwa, which is handy if you are staying north of the centre. In Kraków they arrive at Kraków Główny, under the Galeria Krakowska shopping centre and a 10-minute walk from the Main Market Square. That station-to-centre convenience at both ends is the main reason the train beats the plane for most of the year.

Fares. Pendolino tickets use dynamic pricing: the cheapest fares go first and the price rises as the train fills. In October 2026 the listed starting price for a 2nd class Pendolino seat was about 244 zł, and first class costs more. Book on intercity.pl or in the PKP Intercity app, where you can also choose your seat; a seat reservation is included and compulsory on EIP trains. The site and app are available in English, and the ticket arrives as a QR code on your phone.

The slow alternative. InterCity (IC) and TLK trains also run between the two cities, some direct and some with a change. They take 7 to more than 8 hours but are much cheaper, with fares from around 108 zł. One overnight-style option leaves Gdańsk in the small hours and reaches Kraków before lunch, which suits people who do not mind sleeping upright.

Getting to Gdańsk Główny is simple from the Main Town (a walk) or from Sopot and Gdynia (the SKM commuter train). From the airport, the PKM train to Wrzeszcz or a taxi or transfer to the city centre are the usual options; allow at least an hour between landing and a train departure.

2. By plane: when flying actually saves time

Flying from Gdańsk to Kraków only saves time when there is a direct flight. In 2026 LOT Polish Airlines ran a seasonal direct route between Gdańsk (GDN) and Kraków (KRK) from 29 May to 28 September, four times a week (Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday), with a Boeing 737 MAX and a flight time of about 1 hour 15 minutes. LOT's domestic fares usually start somewhere around 199 to 299 zł for a light ticket without checked baggage.

Door to door, even the direct flight is less of a shortcut than it looks. You need to reach Gdańsk Airport (about 30 minutes from the Old Town), be there an hour or more before departure (see our Gdańsk Airport guide for drop-off and security), fly, collect bags and then get from Kraków Airport in Balice into town, which is about 20 minutes by the airport train or 30 minutes by car. Realistically that adds up to 4 to 5 hours, compared with about 6 by Pendolino.

Outside the summer season, the only flights between the two cities connect through Warsaw. With a layover the total journey grows to 2h20 or more in the air and on the ground at Chopin Airport, plus both airport transfers, which puts it level with or slower than the train and usually more expensive. Check lot.com before you plan around a flight: seasonal routes can return, but they are not guaranteed.

If you do fly into Kraków, a fixed-price Kraków Airport to city centre transfer costs €50 by car or €70 by van. (ShuttleHero is run by the same local team as Gdańsk Insider.)

3. By bus: cheap but long

FlixBus is the cheapest way from Gdańsk to Kraków but also the slowest. Its route page lists around 11 departures a day, the fastest taking 8 hours 50 minutes and most closer to 9h30 to 10 hours. Buses leave from the bus station behind Gdańsk Główny (some also call at Gdańsk Airport) and arrive at the MDA bus station next to Kraków Główny or at Kraków Airport. Early fares are often lower than the cheapest train ticket, and there are night buses, which saves a hotel night if you can sleep on a coach.

The trade-off is comfort and predictability. Ten hours on a coach eats a full day, and traffic on the A1 and around Warsaw and Łódź can stretch the schedule. We would only recommend the bus if price is the deciding factor or if every train is sold out.

4. By private transfer: door to door

A private transfer is the most comfortable way to cover the whole route, and for groups it is closer in price to the train than most people expect. ShuttleHero, the transfer company run by our team, drives from Gdańsk Airport to any address in Kraków for a fixed €760 per car for 1 to 3 passengers or €990 per van for 4 to 8 passengers with group luggage. The driver takes the A1 motorway south, and the trip takes about 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic and breaks.

What you get for that money is the absence of logistics. Nobody has to drag suitcases through Gdańsk Główny, carry a pram up the platform stairs or wait for a taxi at Kraków Główny in the rain. The car leaves when you are ready, which matters with small children or after a late flight, and the price is the same whether you travel alone or with two friends.

The other advantage is the stop. The A1 passes close to Toruń, the Gothic old town where Copernicus was born, about two hours south of Gdańsk, and to Częstochowa, home of the Jasna Góra monastery, about an hour and a half before Kraków. An hour in Toruń for gingerbread and a walk around the Old Town Square breaks the drive in half and turns a transport day into a sightseeing day. If Toruń deserves more than a stop, see our Toruń day trip guide.

The same route works in reverse, from Kraków to Gdańsk Airport or the city, at the same fixed price. If you book both directions together, the return leg gets 10% off.

5. Which is cheapest for your group?

For one or two people, the train is the clear winner on cost. For four or more, the gap narrows sharply because a transfer is priced per vehicle, not per person. Rough comparison for one way, using the October 2026 starting fares (train and bus prices vary by date, so treat these as orientation):

GroupPendolino (from ~244 zł pp)Private transferTransfer per person
1 person~244 zł€760 (car)€760
2 people~488 zł€760 (car)€380
3 people~732 zł€760 (car)about €253
4 people~976 zł€990 (van)about €248
6 people~1,464 zł€990 (van)€165
8 people~1,952 zł€990 (van)about €124
Last checked: 31 October 2026. Train column = lowest listed 2nd class Pendolino fare multiplied by group size; it excludes getting to and from the stations. Transfer prices are ShuttleHero's fixed per-vehicle prices from Gdańsk Airport to Kraków.

So a couple on a budget should take the train, while a family of five or a group of friends sharing a van ends up paying a similar amount per head as the train once you add station taxis, and travels with all its luggage in one vehicle.
